Art and Craftsmanship

“A craftsman is known by his work.”

The work of the hand.

According to UNESCO, traditional craftsmanship is “the most tangible manifestation of intangible cultural heritage.” And yet, Le Negresco is not merely a standard-bearer for this vision. It incarnates it inherently. It has infused its walls with a gust of art like no other place.

With a collection boasting more than 6,000 artworks, the jewel of the Belle Époque has provided a sanctuary for art and history since it was purchased by Jeanne Augier.

Through this magnificent collection of paintings, sculptures, tapestries, period furniture… Madame Augier was determined to showcase the great periods in the history of French art, from the reign of Louis XIII to the present time. For instance, in the Salon Royal, Niki de Saint Phalle’s Nana Jaune perfectly complements a series of seven brightly coloured contemporary rugs bespoke made by Raymond Moretti. Each piece has stood the test of time, bearing within it the spirit of the artists who created it.

Transmitting these treasures to future generations. Taking great care of every piece.

Perpetuating excellence. Such is the very essence of the philosophy of Le Negresco.

The hotel is incredibly proud to have been awarded the prestigious title of “Living Heritage Company” (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant) by the French government. This label not only represents the consecration of a tradition, but also upholds our commitment to craftsmanship, culture, and local heritage. It represents the love of fine workmanship, the preservation of high quality, character-filled surroundings, restored to their former glory through the skills of talented manufacturers and craftsmen.

The painstaking efforts of the devoted craftsmen working at Le Negresco wholly illustrate this commitment.

From the creation and maintenance of some 400 curtains that so gracefully drape the Negresco’s windows to the meticulous restoration of the natural silk wall hangings, the trimmings, and the antique armchairs, two Compagnons du Devoir upholsterers work hand-in-hand to safeguard the precious collection.

They care devotedly for the exceptional textiles sourced from the world’s most prestigious upholsterers, many of whom have been awarded the “Living Heritage Company” (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant) label. Expert restorers and decorators are also part of the team and guarantee the conservation of these invaluable pieces of period furniture.

The dining room is also the place where craftsmanship and gastronomy intersect. The fabrics, delicate porcelain tableware, glasses, wine carafes and cutlery all add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any meal while paying homage to the authentic local produce, regional recipes and traditional skills.

As a result, these hidden ateliers are home to a host of talented craftsmen and women. The secret of Le Negresco’s soul is passed down by these men and women who work in every nook and corner of the hotel’s salons and corridors. These craftsmen hold the keys to an intangible passion, built on tradition, emotions, memories, and, who knows, future vocations…
